Situation Report: WEEK 8
A few possibly significant events occurred over this weekend in NOVAFFL league play. A nasty collision during the No-Namers – Extraordinaires game left Kahari and Coach D (was filling in) with some serious injuries. Big Ron was exchanged for MadCap and a player to be named later. And the No-Namers came up with possibly the upset of the season by handing the Hawks their 3rd loss of the year. Also, the continuing QB controversy is apparently taking it’s toll on the Tribe Called CONquest, is the team’s coaching staff going to make a decision on the starting QB, or will they allow this controversy to ruin their playoff seeding? With playoff time right around the corner these events could have some serious implications.
From what I’ve heard Coach D was hurt in a freak collision with Kahari and another unknown player. I turned my head and saw it happen at the very last second and it was nasty. You could hear it from about 30 yards away. Luckily they were both able to leave the field on their own. Coach D’s injury could appear to have the most affect on a Nova team as he is an on the field leader of the Upper Deckers who have gained some momentum and are making a late season push for a better playoff seeding. What happens to the Upper Deckers now? Will coach D return to the sidelines, or will he be watching from the sky box ala’ Coach Joe Paterno one of the greatest NCAA coaches of all time (Yeah I’m a born Penn State fan so I had to get that in there!!!). Will the UD be able to hold it together or will they be like the Cutters and lose their field prowess without one of their star players? Personally I think that UD will probably see a first round exit in the playoffs without their leader, but if Coach D can make it out and lead his team from the sideline, the image of seeing their fearless leader limp around the field may give the Upper Deckers the motivation and inspiration needed to cause some major upsets along the road towards the first ever NOVABOWL. If anything Coach D’s injury might send signals to other players to avoid being nice and playing for a team that isn’t there own to help them field a full squad, even if it for the love of the game!
After the Candles lost both of their games this weekend and continued their downward spiral to the depths of the lower ranks in the NOVAFFL sewer, Team Captain Del finally had enough of the loud one. His talents were obviously no longer worth the drama and tension he was causing the team. A simple Cost-Benefit analysis should have proven this point at the beginning of the season. A point I make is that I don’t think it is injuries or off field problems with the other players on the Candles (now to be referred to as Chaotic Cougars) that lead to them being able to only field 6 players a week, I think that the rest of the players were fed up of hearing the bickering and pettiness of the loud one on a weekly basis and thus stopped showing up. Who could blame them? Del shopped Big Ron to every team captain in the league, and finally in a secret dealing that nobody knew about until later on in the day, Big Loud was traded to the Dawgs for the team founder and soul of the team MadCap as well as a player to be named later. MadCap was then given full GM powers of the team. This trade is huge. Not only does Cap give them a viable WR, but teaming up with his old buddy Mike D on the Dline gives them some more added pressure. Plus Cap is without a doubt one of the top free agent recruiters in the league and can help bolster the roster of the Candles. However, a point that must be remembered is that only 14 slots are allowed to be used on a team’s roster and the Candles started the season off with a pretty decent sized squad so Cap may not be able to take full advantage of his new powers. Another point to be brought up is, should Big Loud be allowed to play in the Sunday games this week for the Maddawgs. Technically this trade wasn’t made until week 8 and the Sunday games are in reality week 7 games. This should be discussed in the staff room IMO.
The Namers came up with a huge W over the Hawks this week, when most everyone counted them out. Not only does this catapult them in terms of power ranking status, but it continues their late season surge for a prime playoff seeding. Was this game a fluke? Could it be possible that the Hawks didn’t play to their best ability on purpose so as to make them appear to be more vulnerable before playoff time? Or are the Namers finally playing up to their preseason billing and realizing their potential? I’m not sure honestly but nevertheless it was an excellent game played by both sides. The question must be asked though, how long can Jason carry this team on his back? If he has an off day in the playoffs they could be seeing an early and disappointing exit. Kahari, a founding member of the Namers, was injured in that nasty collision with Coach D, and is also out for the season. Will his injury have any implications the Namers late season momentum? Throughout the season he’s made some great plays but also, missed some great plays. It’s never good to see any player get injured and we wish both Kahari and Coach D a speedy and full recovery in time for pickup and the next season! The Namers are gunning for that #3 seed and could possibly reach it after the 4 games to be played this weekend.
My final point to discuss is to bring up the controversy swirling in ConQuests camp. Several players on the CONS roster appear to be getting fed up, and are losing motivation to play hard due to the inconsistency at QB. A few were even noticed to be playing half-heartedly towards the end of their beating by the Hawks. Loyalty is one thing in this league, but how far do you let your ship sink before you cut your dead weight to stay afloat? Maybe if they could somehow combine their two QB’s into 1 single being? I don’t know and I doubt that it’s possible, but I do know that no team stands a good shot at winning the NOVABOWL with controversy at the QB position. Our league is to competitive for a team to win with any weaknesses, especially at the QB position. The other teams already smell the blood in the water and are undoubtedly game planning to take advantage of Quests most blaring (and quite possibly only) weakness. This team is full of talent at every position and has the ability to take the Championship home to Theo’s for a post season party. Will they be like the Bears of the 05’ season and choke in their first round due to bad QB play, or will they get it together and get hot for the last 4 games before the playoffs and get their minds right for the road to the first NOVABOWL???
